Often tenants introduce the bed bugs in their own rental units; a common problem that can cause tremendous headaches for those involved in property management Florida. This problem literally means lost rent for property owners; additionally, it also means a loss of reputation.

Bed bugs can be prevented by educating tenants regarding some basic factors as well as hygiene considerations. Tenants must be prohibited from bringing used mattresses, beds, sofas etc from the streets. Tenants must be also encouraged to wash their mattresses using commercial grade washers under hot water settings.

Apart from the tenants following these simple steps, it is the manager's duty to promptly seal cracks and caulk windows and doors from where the bugs can enter.

Tenants need to be aware that it is their right to live in a rental unit that is free of such pests and that it is their landlord's legal obligation to eradicate bed bugs promptly. In many states, bedbugs are a "Class B violation" which means that they are a hazard that must be eliminated within 30 days of the tenant bringing it to their notice.

Tenants also need to allow landlords to enter their units for regularly scheduled property inspections. Landlords and managers need to give a minimum 24 hour notice for accessing the units for inspections. Only through such mutual cooperation can the pesky problem of bed bugs be handled with efficiency.
